We have implemented 3DS in the Mercado Pago Cards application for Shopify!

3DS (3-Domain Secure) is a technology that allows the authentication of credit and debit card transactions in online stores. Before the final purchase authorization, an identity verification is carried out to ensure that the person making the purchase is actually the cardholder. This validation contributes to reducing the risk of fraud significantly.

In the Mercado Pago Cards flow for Shopify, we have implemented the 3DS experience in a modal format, allowing for discreet and efficient identity verification without requiring the user to leave the store.

Additionally, only transactions declined for high risk are sent for validation, keeping the purchasing process simple and fast, without compromising the security of all parties involved.

Check out what other benefits the implementation of 3DS in Mercado Pago Cards brings:

  • Higher payment approval rate: payments that could be rejected due to high risk or bank decisions have a higher probability of approval with 3DS authentication.

  • Reduction in disputes and fraud: this technology allows for better data exchange between merchants and issuers, refining decision-making in authorizations and fraud detection.

  • No losses due to chargebacks: when a payment is authenticated and later identified as fraud, the responsibility for the chargeback falls on the banks.

  • Flexible, secure, and more controlled user experience: buyers feel more secure, as only those with access to their devices can make a payment on their behalf. Additionally, the entire process is simple and fast, with low cart abandonment rates.

  • Complies with regional regulations: the protocol is compatible with customer authentication requirements for issuers, acquirers, and payment service providers in regulated markets.
